Having an Energy Star HVAC System Will Make a Difference in Your Savings

Having an Energy Star HVAC System Will Make a Difference in Your SavingsIf high cooling bills and air conditioning repair costs are mounting, consider an Energy Star HVAC system for your home. HVAC systems that earn this U.S. EPA’s label have proven they’re more efficient than other kinds, and given the high cooling demand in the Peachtree area, more than make up for their higher costs in long term energy savings.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that half the energy consumption in the typical home goes toward keeping it comfortable. A system that carries the Energy Star designation and is installed according to the Energy Star guidelines will have lower energy costs and fewer repairs.

Choosing the A/C, Heat Pump, or Furnace

As you select the system you want, verify it has the Energy Star label and an ARI matchup for actual efficiency ratings.  The next step that’s crucial for the best performance and your comfort is having your contractor conduct a load calculation for your home using Manual J software. Going by the size of your existing equipment can be misleading, since your home’s energy efficiency may have changed since the existing system was installed.

If you skip the professional sizing process, the Energy Star HVAC system you install could be too large, which actually drives up cooling bills, leaves more humidity behind and may require more repairs. If it’s too small, it may not be able to handle the cooling load required on exceptionally hot days.

Installing the Equipment

Before installation is complete, the HVAC contractor needs to inspect the current ductwork and verify it’s the right size and configuration. They also need to look at the condition of the ductwork or test for air leakage of the existing and new ducts and seal any leaks.

The last component is verifying that the refrigerant level inside the equipment matches what the manufacturer requires. Systems with too little or too much refrigerant won’t be as efficient.
