Going To A Heat-Pump System? Four Things You Need To Consider

Going To A Heat-Pump System? Four Things You Need To ConsiderWhen used in a suitable climate, heat pumps can provide an extremely efficient source of heating and cooling to meet your home’s needs. A correctly installed air-source heat pump can effectively warm your home, while having a relatively small impact on your energy consumption, because it can provide up to three times more heating energy than the electrical energy it uses.

Selecting an air-source heat pump for your home? Consider these four important factors, recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy:

  • Demand-defrost control is an essential feature to look for with your heat pump. This feature reduces heat-pump and supplemental energy usage by minimizing the defrost cycles.
  • Place the heat-pump coil upstream of the furnace for maximum efficiency, when looking to add a heat pump to an electric style furnace.
  • Noise considerations need to be accounted for in the best way possible. Place the outdoor unit clear of windows and nearby buildings, and consider mounting the unit itself on a noise-reducing platform. Selecting a heat pump with a low outdoor sound rating is also recommended; look for 7.6 bels or less.
  • Your unit’s efficiency is often tied directly to its location. Find an outdoor spot that is shielded from high winds, as they can be a catalyst for potential defrosting issues. Strategic fence or vegetation – such as trees or bushes – placement can provide the necessary wind protection for your outdoor unit.

These tips should help you turn your investment in a heat-pump system into optimal efficiency and comfort, and improve the conditions in your home for you and your loved ones.
