Furnace Troubleshooting: Some Easy Fixes To Try Before You Call The Repairman

Furnace Troubleshooting: Some Easy Fixes To Try Before You Call The RepairmanBefore you call an HVAC repairman to come fix problems you’re experiencing with your furnace, you may be able to take care of the problems fairly easily. There are often very simple solutions to some of the most common issues, and fixing them yourself can save you money.

Below are some of the more common problems, along with simple furnace troubleshooting tips that can restore your heat and comfort. Important: Always shut off the electricity and gas to your heating system before doing any kind of work to it.

Furnace Not Producing Heat

First make sure your furnace isn’t set to cooling mode. If outdoor temperatures have only dropped recently, you might not have switched it over yet. If this is properly set, check to see if your pilot light needs to be reignited (not a concern if you have electronic ignition). Also check to see if your furnace’s circuit needs resetting.

Furnace Not Producing Enough Heat

The main cause of system breakdowns is a dirty air filter and it can also cause poor heat distribution throughout your home. If you neglect your filter for too long, the particles it captures accumulate and form a thick screen that air can’t easily pass through. It forces your air system to work harder than it should and causes your energy costs to rise.

You may also have a leaky ductwork system that is allowing too much of your conditioned air to escape before it ever makes it into your home. You can patch up problematic holes and leaks with duct mastic though, a putty-like material that spreads on easily and hardens, preventing air from getting out.

Furnace Is Too Noisy

Lubricate the moving parts to reduce operational noise. If this isn’t enough to fix the problem, you may need to call an HVAC expert so they can reach all the components that aren’t easily accessible.
