Your Fall To-Do List: Check The Vents And Ducts For Seven Common ProblemsBefore the temperature starts dropping, you should make sure that your HVAC system is prepared to keep you warm all winter long. An important part of that entails making sure your vents and ducts are working properly and are well-maintained.

Here are seven common problems you should look for and remedy as soon as you can:

  1. Faulty connections between ducts: If your ducts have not been properly tightened, you can lose up to 20 percent of your air to unneeded spaces like the attic or basement.  Make sure they are completely tight so that the air you are paying for reaches its destination.
  2. Blocked registers: Be sure that you don’t have furniture or curtains covering the supply vents that send air into your living spaces. This inhibits the natural airflow that is key to maintaining efficiency.
  3. Fallen duct insulation: Insulation on your ductwork can help prevent heat transfer in areas like your basement or crawlspaces during the more extreme months of winter and summer. It helps maintain the temperature of the air within the duct system so that your home reaches your ideal temperature more quickly. But if the insulation has fallen off, you need to put more on to keep that protection.
  4. Kinks in ductwork: Similar to how a kink in a water hose will prevent water from spraying properly, kinks in your ductwork will inhibit your airflow. Crushed or flattened ducts may need to be replaced but simple realignment can help eliminate kinks.

Those are the main problems that affect performance, but it’s important to also check for leaks in the return ducts, leaks at the furnace and filter slot and supply leaks.

By having your heating and cooling equipment checked by an expert each year, you will be sure that these problems aren’t occurring and that you are getting the most savings and comfort possible from your home’s HVAC system.
