Have you been putting off upgrading your furnace or replacing your water heater with a more energy-efficient model? Now is the time to act — before the winter chill settles over central Georgia. Not only will you stay warm throughout the season, but you also might be able to qualify for federal energy tax credits that are expiring at the end of 2011.
What Are the 2011 Federal Energy Tax Incentives?
The 2011 federal energy tax credits allow homeowners who make energy-saving improvements to their existing primary residence by Dec. 31, 2011, a tax credit of up to $500 per improvement on their 2011 federal income tax return. These credits apply to materials and sometimes labor and installation, depending on the product. These credits do not apply to improvements made to rental homes, vacation houses or newly constructed homes.
To claim the credit, homeowners need to complete IRS form 5695 and file it with their 2011 federal income tax return.
HVAC Products That Qualify
A wide variety of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) products qualify for the 2011 tax incentives. Among these are:
Keep in mind that not all HVAC products, even those that are Energy Star certified, qualify for the 2011 federal energy tax credits.
