Saving energy makes good sense — and good cents. Making the choice to implement an energy-savings plan is always a good idea that saves you money in the long run. By simply conducting an energy audit of your home, you’ll know exactly where to start and what to plan for in the future.
Do you know where your home is losing energy? It’s easier than you might think to discover where the greatest loss of energy is in your home. Do you feel cold air coming in around your doors or windows? That’s a sign that heat is escaping and cold air is seeping in through a leak or poorly insulated area. Do you notice some rooms in your home are colder than others? That is probably an indication that your insulation isn’t evenly distributed or your HVAC system needs to be serviced in order to properly circulate air evenly throughout your home. Do you have appliances that were made before 1990? Then they are probably significantly less efficient than many Energy Star models on the market today.
At this point you might be wondering when you are going to see savings if things like window, appliances and insulation need to be replaced. Remember: Long-term energy savings plans require a bit of initial investment for a bigger future payoff. Once you’ve identified the problem areas in your home, ask yourself what projects you can do yourself, what projects offer a tax credit and what areas are causing the greatest energy losses. Compare all these facts to create a list prioritizing each project in an order you can reasonably handle. Completing even one of the projects mentioned cuts the average homeowners energy bill by at least five percent.
