How An Attic Fan Can Reduce Attic Heat And HumidityBefore the advent of air conditioning, attic fans or whole-house fans were the primary means used to cool residential housing. Attic temperatures can reach upwards of 150 degrees in the summertime, and an attic fan can help evacuate the hot air and humidity that can build up.

When the air in your attic becomes super heated, it can drastically increase the workload on your air conditioner. When your air conditioner is working overtime to maintain a cool temperature in your home, your energy costs can increase significantly. Installing an attic fan to vent the hot air will reduce the workload on your air conditioner, which in turn reduces your energy costs and saves you money.

The fans work by drawing cooler air from outside your home through vents installed in the gable ends of the structure and pushing the super heated air out through the fan. When in operation, this allows a continuous circulation of cool, fresh air to flow through your attic area. This circulation prevents the air from becoming super heated since it’s always on the move.

Installing one in your home consists of placing the appliance about two feet from the point of the roof, providing a power supply for electric models and mounting it to the roof. Homes without gable-end vents will also need them installed for the attic fan to work properly. Mounting the unit requires cutting a hole in the roof. Don’t worry, the fans are equipped with flashing that fits in with the shingles, making it waterproof. Average fans typically use less than 300 watts — far less than most air conditioning units.

The fan can work automatically by incorporating a thermostat. Other advantages include extended roof life by keeping the roofing material cooler, savings of up to 30 percent on air conditioning costs and reduction of room temperatures by as much as 10 degrees.

  1. It’s interesting that fans usually use less than 300 watts when they’re working. How many watts does the average lightbulb take? I think that would be a good comparison.
