Efficient air conditioning is mandatory for keeping you and your family comfortable during the hot Georgia summers. If your home was less than comfortable last cooling season, you’ll want to seriously consider upgrading or replacing your air conditioner.

Residential cooling is not a simple issue. Get the advice of a professional HVAC specialist to guide you in making the correct decisions for your home. Before making any decisions, consider the following:

• Do you want a split-system unit or packaged air conditioner for your home? A split-system unit is the most economical choice for a home that already has a furnace, but for new construction, a package central air conditioning unit may make more sense since these types of systems often come with electric heating coils or natural gas heating.
• If your existing central air conditioner is more than 10 years old, you can save from 20-50 percent on your energy costs by upgrading your current air conditioner to a high-efficiency model. Look for an Energy Star-certified A/C when upgrading your cooling system.
• You may need to replace your entire A/C system, including ductwork, if your home has undergone renovations or if the existing ductwork in your home isn’t compatible with your new air conditioner.
• Choosing the correctly sized A/C system for your home is crucial. Systems that are not large enough to cool your home will become overworked and will not effectively cool your home. An oversized A/C unit will cycle on and off frequently, wasting energy, stressing parts, and not providing balanced cooling or adequate dehumidification.
• Timing is everything. Now available federal energy tax credits make 2013 a great year to replace your existing air conditioning.
