Air Conditioning Maintenance: A Spring Visit Can Keep You Cool Through The Summer

Air Conditioning Maintenance: A Spring Visit Can Keep You Cool Through The SummerThere’s nothing that beats annual air conditioning maintenance in terms of return on investment for a minimal investment. While purchasing a high-quality, high-efficiency air conditioner and improving the home’s thermal efficiency are wise investments, without air conditioning maintenance, you’ll risk a host of problems that are entirely avoidable.

Every spring, your air conditioner requires a tune-up to remove dirt that can hinder efficiency and wear out components, and identify worn parts that can lead to a system failure. In this way, the spring tune-up encourages optimal system efficiency over Georgia’s long, hot summer, and ensures you can depend on a more reliable cooling system.

While professional maintenance is essential, and includes tasks such as checking ductwork, measuring airflow and refrigerant, and cleaning the coils, motors and fan blades, there are tasks you can do to assist with the tune-up, improving the return on your investment. Here’s what you should do:

  • Check the A/C air filter every month. Replace it with a new filter when the surface looks full or brown, or when you hold it up to a light and can’t see light passing through the material.
  • Keep the area within a two-foot perimeter of the outdoor condenser clear. Grass, weeds, leaves and other yard debris can inhibit the necessary flow of air.

Neglect air conditioning maintenance, and you’ll subject your system to a host of problems, including:

  • Poor efficiency, as dirt buildup on the system’s components causes it to consume more energy to operate. This results in higher energy bills.
  • Poor comfort in the home. Dirt buildup on the coils, for instance, can greatly decrease cooling output.
  • Repairs, as dirt that settles on fan blades causes the motor to work harder, and hastens system malfunctions and breakdowns.
  • A shorter life span, requiring a system replacement before your A/C’s predicted service life is over.
