Vacationing? Tend to Your Home Safety and Security Before You Take Off
The nice weather and break from schooling make summer a good time for extended vacations for many people. If you’re going to leave home for an extended period this summer, it’s best to take some steps to reduce energy use and protect your home safety and security. Mishaps with the wiring, plumbing or appliances can lead to more damage if you’re not around to respond to them. Additionally, unoccupied homes can make an easy target for burglars.
To conserve energy and reduce to the risks to your home safety and security, you’ll want to:
Unplug appliances that won’t be running. This lessens the risk of electrical fire or damage from power surges. It also saves any energy that the appliance uses in standby mode.
Turn your thermostat up. You don’t want to completely turn of the air conditioning because some items in you home may be damaged by the extremely hot temperatures that could develop in a closed-up house. Also, the absence of noise from the outdoor unit would tip off burglars to the fact the no one is home. If you have a programmable thermostat, you should be able to schedule it to restore your home to a comfortable temperature before you return.
Shut off water to appliances to reduce the risk of leaks causing water damage or flooding the home.
Turn down the temperature on your storage water heater to save energy. Some water heaters have a “vacation” setting.
Plug some lights into timers that will turn them on and off to give the appearance of activity in the home.
Unplug your automatic garage door opener to eliminate it as a potential way to gain entry into your home.
Suspend deliveries from your post office and newspaper carrier.
Have your lawn mowed if you will be gone long enough for it to be required.
