A/C Maintenance Tasks to Complete Before You Close it Down for the Year

A/C Maintenance Tasks to Complete Before You Close it Down for the YearThe summer heat has kept your A/C system working hard to cool your home all season. All that work can put a significant amount of stress on the system, but you can take action to help it recover with a few simple A/C maintenance tips.

  • Clean the unit – Dust, dirt and debris can accumulate on your outdoor A/C unit and impede the crucial transfer of heat that lets the system do its job. To remedy this problem, simply give the unit a good rinse with the water hose. Make sure you turn the power off at the main breaker to prevent electrocution and damage to the system. Leave the power off for a couple of days so the unit can dry completely.
  • Change the filter – Hopefully, you’re in the habit of changing your A/C filter at least once a month during peak season. A dirty filter can impede the flow of air through the system and make your A/C work harder than it needs to and waste energy. Keeping a clean filter also improves the quality of air in your home, reducing your exposure to allergens, bacteria and viruses.
  • Schedule a tuneup – The most important thing you can do to ensure that your A/C system runs trouble-free season after season is to have it tuned up regularly by a professional. A trusted HVAC technician can perform a few simple but essential maintenance chores and warn you if he sees trouble developing. This will keep your system running efficiently for years and prevent costly breakdowns.
  • Get ready for winter – Winter weather can be hard on your A/C unit. Cover the top of it with a piece of plywood to protect if from the elements. Covering just the top will suffice; covering it completely can invite moisture and rust.
