If you’re one of the 30 million Americans who suffer from fall allergies, there are a number of ways you can make your Peachtree City area home a haven from the 17 varieties of pollen that can trigger severe allergy attacks and make your life miserable. Source Control

Your best defense against pollen and other allergens is to prevent them from entering your home in the first place.

• Remove your shoes at the door to prevent tracking pollen and other pollutants throughout your home.
• Keep your windows closed and your air conditioner or heating on.
• Wipe your pets’ paws with a damp towel when they come in from outdoors. Bathe them weekly to remove allergenic particles from their fur.
• Remove carpeting and install hard flooring. Allergens become trapped in carpeting and are difficult to remove.

Particle Removal

Since it’s not possible to prevent all allergens from entering your home, your second defense against indoor allergens is to remove them.

• Vacuum weekly with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter.
• Dust at least once a week with an electrostatic dusting cloth.
• Check your HVAC air filter every month. When it’s caked with dust, replace it with a high-quality, pleated filter to remove particles from your home’s air.
• Wash your bedding weekly in hot water to remove particles such as pollen and dust mites.

Air cleaners can remove particles that the vacuum cleaner, dusting cloth and HVAC air filter don’t remove.

• Electronic air cleaners use electrostatic technology to give particles a charge and either trap them on an oppositely charged collection plate or cause them to fall to surfaces to be cleaned and removed by standard methods.
• Mechanical air filters, such as HEPA filters, trap particles from your home’s air on thick, dense filters.
• Ultraviolet lights installed in your HVAC system kill biological contaminants such as mold spores, pollen, bacteria and viruses.
