Do You Know the Advantages of an Attic Fan?

Do You Know the Advantages of an Attic Fan?On a hot day in Peachtree City, few things are more inviting than a comfortable, air conditioned home. But, while you’re enjoying the cool air in your living area, your attic is a steaming oven. Your attic has a passive ventilation system—but when it’s hot out, the temperature is still intolerable. Adding active ventilation will keep your attic cooler, which can lower your energy bills and extend the life of your home’s roof and your air conditioner.

Here are three advantages of an attic fan:

  1. An attic fan regulates the temperature of your attic, which reduces the load on your air conditioner. Along with correct insulation in your ceiling, an attic fan will keep your living areas up to 10 degrees cooler—that’s 10 less degrees for your A/C to cool. Also, if you install a solar-powered attic fan, you don’t even need to pay for the electricity to run it.
  2. As mentioned, one of the advantages of an attic fan is that it keeps your home cooler. That means you won’t need to turn your A/C on as early in the season, which will save plenty on your energy bill. It’s certainly not a replacement for an A/C during the hot Georgia summer, but along with ceiling fans, it will make the spring and fall bearable without expensive air conditioning.
  3. An attic fan is useful all year round. Excess moisture is the enemy of your roof, and an attic fan exhausts the humid air from showering and cooking from your home. This keeps mold, frost and ice from forming in your attic. More important, it will keep the rafters and roof decking from rotting from excess moisture.

Installing an attic fan isn’t complicated, if you’re comfortable with a saw and your home’s electrical system you can do it yourself in an afternoon. Attic fans come in different configurations, some mount directly in front of your home’s gables, while others mount on the roof. And, they can come with or without a thermostat.
