What is the Best Temperature for Your Home While You’re Away at Work

What is the Best Temperature for Your Home While You're Away at WorkOne of the biggest misconceptions about heating and cooling your home is that you should leave the thermostat on at the same temperature whether you’re at home relaxing or away at work. As you’ll soon learn, this misconception could be taking unnecessary dollars out of your wallet every month.

If you’ve been taught that you need to leave your HVAC system on constantly once it’s been turned on for the season, you may have been spending hundreds–or even thousands–of unnecessary dollars to your utility company. Being smart with your thermostat is the best way to save money every single month without shelling out a dime.

What’s the Right Temperature?

While only you can determine the best temperature for your home, the Department of Energy (DOE) suggests that you aim for a temperature of about 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the summer. Of course, the temperature can (and should) be changed when you’re out of the home or asleep. Why pay extra money to heat or cool the house when you’re not awake, or even home, to enjoy it? Instead, make your heating and cooling system work for you, by setting the temperature back about 10 degrees in the winter and keeping the air temperature in your home 10 degrees warmer in the summer. This will help you keep your home comfortable, while saving you a substantial amount of money over the months to come.

How substantial of a savings can you expect? Well, according to the DOE you can expect to save about one percent on your utility bill for each degree you change the temperature over an eight hour period. Adjusting your temperature for 10 to 15 degrees while you’re at work or asleep can save you anywhere from five to 15 percent on your utility bill over a 12 month period.
