Purchasing a new furnace is an important investment. Choosing the right one for your home makes a big difference in home comfort and your energy bills. Here are things to consider when making your decision.
In most cases, you can safely assume a new furnace will be more energy efficient than your old model. However, to ensure you are getting the heating system that is most efficient and ranks high for performance, choose an Energy Star-certified model. These display the Energy Star label showing that the model has passed special efficiency tests put forth by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Your system must be sized correctly or else you’ll experience decreased home comfort and increased utility bills. Choosing a system that is too big for your home, for example, will often cause it to short cycle, which reduces comfort and ages the system quickly. The most accurate way to determine what size you need is to have a contractor perform a load calculation. This accounts for variables such as cubic footage, weatherization, insulation and the number of residents.
For optimal home comfort and energy savings, choose a model with a variable-speed blower motor rather than a fixed-speed blower. Instead of shutting off when the set temperature is reached, variable-speed blowers run continuously and simply adjust the speed at which it pushes heated air into the home. This results in fewer variations in temperature, quieter operation and less energy use. Air quality also improves because air is circulated through the filter continuously.
Consider a zoning system if your home has more than one level or other features with different climate control needs. Each zone has its own thermostat so you can direct the right amount of heat to meet the needs of individual zones. This keeps the home evenly comfortable and can save money.
