As unpredictable as the weather is, it might be a good idea to schedule your A/C tune up early this year. What’s Involved

An A/C tune up involves a complete inspection of your system, including the outdoor condenser and the indoor air handler. The HVAC technician will:

• Clean and adjust all the parts. Air conditioners vibrate as they run and parts get out of adjustment. The technician will adjust and tighten all the components and check the belt condition and tension.
• Lubricate the system. Cooling equipment uses two motors. One drives the fan inside the outdoor condenser and the other operates the fan inside the air handler. Sometimes these motors require routine oiling, without which, they would burn up.

  The electrical components also need lubrication. Over time, they collect dust and the surfaces oxidize, which slows down the flow of electricity through them. If they’re too corroded, there’s a possibility they can start a fire. Once the tech cleans the components, he will apply a nonconductive lubricant.

• Check the refrigerant level. It’s not uncommon for cooling systems to have too little or too much refrigerant. During the tune up, the HVAC pro will check the level and add more if necessary. A system that has an improper level won’t run efficiently. If there’s too little, the coil inside the air handler could freeze.
