Watch Out for These External Threats to Your HVAC System

Several outdoor elements can pose a threat to your HVAC system. From weather conditions to pests, it’s important to be aware of external HVAC threats so you can take steps to protect your equipment. Keep the following in mind to reduce the risk of damage to your Peachtree City home’s HVAC system this summer.

Weather Conditions

Severe weather, such as heavy rains or high winds, can cause damage to your HVAC system. Windy conditions can blow debris at your equipment, while rain water can pool on or around your outdoor unit. Standing water can result in mold growth or cause other types of damage to your HVAC system, especially if it carries debris. Damage from lightning strikes, while more rare, can also occur during summer storms.

Dirt

Dirt can get inside your HVAC system and accumulate on components. This can lead to damage to your system’s compressor, coils, and other parts, resulting in the need for repairs. Having dirt build up inside your outdoor unit can also lead to more wear and tear, which can shorten the life span of your HVAC system.

Vegetation

Tree branches, bushes, and shrubs can damage your HVAC system if they scrape against it or restrict airflow. It’s important to trim branches, shrubs, and bushes so that they’re at least 2 feet away from your HVAC system on all sides. You should also remove weeds and other vegetation that can block airflow through your outdoor unit on a regular basis.

Pests

Pests can build nests inside, under, or next to outdoor HVAC units. When this happens, you can end up with severe damage to your HVAC system. You should check for signs of a pest infestation throughout the summer — and have these pests removed as needed. This is especially important at the end of the cooling season when pests might look for a place to nest during the colder winter months.
