How do HVAC technicians diagnose what’s wrong with your system? They have a number of tools at their disposal, but one of the most useful is the digital HVAC gauge. How do they work? What do they do? Here’s a look at what the best digital HVAC gauges have to offer.
Unless you’re experienced with HVAC system repairs, you probably don’t need an HVAC gauge in your home. However, it’s still important to understand their role in diagnosing your system and what’s happening when your technician uses one.
Also called a manifold gauge, an HVAC gauge measures the pressure of both liquids and gases in your HVAC system. This makes it ideal for determining the refrigerant charge of your AC or heat pump. It can measure pressure in both the evaporator coil and the condenser coil to ensure proper refrigerant levels as it becomes a gas and then as it transforms back into a liquid.
An analog HVAC gauge measures pressure by moving a needle up and down on a pressure meter. Different analog gauges are designed for different types of refrigerant, so a technician needs to carry several types of gauges.
A digital gauge is much easier to read and to use, and the best digital HVAC gauges provide an immediate readout of temperature and pressure levels in both your evaporator and condenser coils, along with a host of other important HVAC data, on a clear and accurate digital display. Furthermore, they’re designed to accommodate a variety of different refrigerant types, so one model will do the job on almost any unit.
