As a homeowner, one thing you can bet on is that eventually you’ll have to call an HVAC technician to service or repair your heating or cooling system, or to install a new system entirely. When this happens, how can you be sure you’re getting quality customer service?
Unfortunately, recognizing poor customer service is easier than recognizing good service. You know the drill — a rude, slovenly-dressed repairman comes into your home, doesn’t seem to know what he’s doing, and leaves an hour or two later, and you have no idea what he did. Look for these hallmarks of quality customer service:
- The HVAC technician should arrive on time and present himself or herself professionally and politely. The technician should be able to show certification by North American Technician Excellence (NATE) and other respected HVAC organizations. This confirms the technician has passed a rigorous series of tests in general and specific areas of HVAC expertise.
- If you require an installation or major repair job on your HVAC system, the contractor should ask to inspect your system and home before providing an estimate.
- The technician should ask pertinent questions about your HVAC system, its history and your household’s preferences and habits when it comes to heating and cooling.
- After the service person has examined your equipment or situation, he should provide a clear diagnosis of the problem and submit a detailed plan for resolving the issue.
- If you’re replacing a heating or cooling system, the technician should discuss your options regarding available advanced features and energy efficiency. You should get a good sense of the trade-offs between higher upfront costs (for efficiency and advanced features) and a bargain-basement installation. With the first you’ll enjoy lower operating costs throughout the life of your new system, and with the latter, you’ll see higher energy costs month to month. For heating, some middle ground might make sense for homes in Southern climates like ours.
