Should You Relocate Your HVAC System?

Should You Relocate Your HVAC System?Remodeling your home, building a swimming pool, or changing the aesthetics can certainly be an exciting venture to undertake, and a common question that homeowners ask is whether or not they should move their heating or cooling system.

To answer this question, let’s look at a few facts concerning HVAC relocation:

Reasons for Relocation

There are quite a few reasons why someone might decide to relocate their HVAC system. Perhaps you’re putting in an addition to the home that would require that the system be moved. Maybe there’s been an erosion of land or damage to the unit that has been caused by children or pets. Or your property might have been rezoned. Just make sure that your reasons for taking on the task are legitimate.

Relocating the System Can Be Very Difficult

Moving your HVAC system to a new location is a massive undertaking. You must take precautions such as removing the refrigerant before relocating the unit, and you must be extremely careful not to bend the refrigerant line at a severe angle to prevent leakage. While you may be able to do many tasks around the house, this is not one of them.

Qualified HVAC Technician is Required

We often provide tips to homeowners that will allow them to do small tasks around the house on their own. As mentioned above, this is not one of those times. The relocation of an HVAC system is simply too complicated and has too many variables where something could go wrong, which could make an already expensive relocation much more costly. Always call a qualified technician to do the job.

The Cost of Moving the System

The cost of moving your HVAC system will depend on a few factors, but overall, you’ll probably be looking at around $1,000. This price can go up depending on the amount of work involved and whether or not the relocation becomes especially tricky.
