Summer Bug Repellant for Your HVAC System

Summer Bug Repellant for Your HVAC SystemWhen summer arrives, the number of bugs that a homeowner must deal with can be overwhelming at times. They show up in the darndest of places and that includes your HVAC system.

Bugs in HVAC equipment can cause problems, so we’ve come up with a few tips to help avoid an infestation:

Install Mesh Screens

Bugs are known to use air vents that lead inside your home, getting into your HVAC equipment and other places. Mesh screens placed over these vents will stop all but the tiniest of these pests.

Inspect Your Ductwork

Ductwork is another great way for insects to find their way into your HVAC equipment. Inspect it for holes and gaps, and then fix any problems you find with either foil tape or sealant.

Change the Air Filter

Everyone knows that your HVAC system’s efficiency is hurt by dirt and debris that clogs up the air filter. What you might not think about is the moisture that can often comes from your sytem once this happens, attracting bug and other pests. This is just one more reason why you should change the filter on a regular basis.

Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit

Your HVAC system’s outdoor unit is susceptible to bugs due to its location, providing a conduit inside your home. Even bees and wasps have been known to build nests there. As a general rule, it’s a good idea to keep all water, vegetation, and debris at least two feet away from the unit all away around.

This is why it’s important that you take the necessary steps to keep these critters out of your home and out of its HVAC system. You can avoid these pests by following these simple tips to bug proof your home:

Tip #1: Seal the Doors

Much of the time, insects don’t have to sneak inside your home — they can literally walk through the front door. If you don’t mind having some tiny houseguests that bring germs in with them, then sit back and enjoy. But if you want to keep them out, it’s time to pick up some weather stripping at your local hardware store and seal the edges.

Tip #2: Seal Other Cracks

The truth is, there are cracks and gaps in every house, whether it’s around the edges of your doors and windows, your foundation, or along your walls. These gaps provide the perfect opportunity for insects, arachnids, and other small pests to slip inside your home and set up shop. These areas can be sealed with the use of weather stripping, caulking, or spray foam, depending on the size of the problem. And if you have any trouble finding these cracks and gaps, call an HVAC technician to help you hunt them down.

Tip #3: Clean Up the Yard

Bugs and other pests love to hide out in your yard. If you have piles of leaves or other debris lying around, the number of these critters will quickly multiply. Standing water is also a problem, because bugs like mosquitoes are attracted to it and will eventually find their way inside. This is especially important to avoid because mosquitoes are known to carry disease. We suggest that you clean up your yard on a regular basis.
