Tips for Improving IAQ Throughout Your Peachtree City Home

Tips for Improving IAQ Throughout Your Peachtree City HomeIf the air quality in your Peachtree City home is poor, it can aggravate the symptoms of allergies, asthma, colds and other respiratory problems, or even cause life-threatening illnesses due to high levels of airborne toxins. By improving indoor air quality throughout your home, you can protect your family’s health and make your home more comfortable.

Bedrooms

Choose bedding that’s hypoallergenic, including mattress and box spring covers. Wash sheets, pillow covers and blankets weekly in water that’s 130 degrees or above. Avoid thick carpeting that accumulates dust, and take throw rugs outside regularly to beat the dust out of them. Use an air cleaner while sleeping and keep pets out of the bedroom if you have pet allergies.

Kitchen

Use an exhaust fan while cooking to keep humidity levels low. Repair any plumbing leaks immediately and clean surfaces exposed to moisture thoroughly to avoid mold growth. Wash dishes and take the garbage out daily to avoid health concerns like bacteria or mold, as well as avoid attracting pests.

Bathrooms

To prevent the growth of mold and mildew, use an exhaust fan while bathing and clean the shower or bathtub often. Also, wash towels and rugs weekly, repair any plumbing leaks and choose water-resistant materials like tile for bathroom surfaces.

Other Areas

Keep your HVAC system maintained and change the air filter often to improve indoor air quality. Have your fuel-burning appliances, like the water heater and furnace, serviced regularly to prevent excessive carbon monoxide levels, and test your home for radon, if your area is susceptible to it. Keep your humidity below 50 percent using dehumidifiers or your air conditioning system to avoid dust mite and mold problems.

When you’re cleaning, use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter and turn on the fan in your HVAC system to help filter the air. Reduce clutter to make cleaning easier, and dust your home often using moist cloths or disposable electrostatic cloths.
