UV Lights Offer Proven Benefits, But Here’s How to Get More Out of Them

UV Lights Offer Proven Benefits, But Here's How to Get More Out of ThemAs a homeowner, you might have heard about the recent popularity of ultraviolet (UV) lights. UV lights can be used as an addition to a traditional air filtration system to eliminate many of the harmful micro-organisms in your indoor air. Regular HVAC filters don’t do a very good job of removing most of these viruses, bacteria, allergens and/or mold spores.

What Are UV Light Systems?

Micro-organisms in your indoor air can greatly reduce air quality, increasing the risk of home occupants getting ill, or triggering their pre-existing respiratory issues and allergies. When light in the ultraviolet spectrum shines on these micro-organisms, it neutralizes and eliminates them. This is the principle upon which UV lights work as an effective germicidal filtration system.

Installation of UV Lamps

There are two main locations where you can install UV lamps to your advantage. If you desire to improve your air quality as much as possible, a UV light system can be installed in the ducts. The light shines on air passing through and destroys various unwanted bioaerosols.

UV lamps can also be used to keep your heat pump or A/C running at high efficiency by preventing (or eliminating) any buildup of mold and bacteria. To accomplish this, lamps are installed to shine on the indoor coils and condensate pan of either system. This also improves indoor air quality.

Replacement of UV Bulbs

UV bulbs have a maximum lifespan of two years. Once they go past this point you will notice a drastic decrease in effectiveness. When these systems are installed in the ductwork, replace the bulbs every year. The extra minor expense is worth the effectiveness that you lose in the second year. For UV lights installed to shine on system components, the bulb replacement can wait till the second year.

It’s a good idea to get a professional opinion on how UV lights can help your specific HVAC system. Schedule a consultation for your Peachtree City area home by contacting our experts at Powers Heating & Air.
