Balanced Humidity Should Be a Year-Round Concern In Your Home
The humidity of your home refers to how much water is in the air inside. Experts agree that the ideal level is at least 30 percent, but no more than 60 percent. The ideal level for your home depends on you, some people prefer a level that is nearer to the bottom or top of this range. Finding the right level inside this balanced humidity range is important for your health.
The Dangers of Low or High Humidity
A low humidity is considered anything below that 30 percent cutoff. If there is a lack of humidity in your home, you will most likely experience discomfort and dryness in your throat, lips and skin. This is not a common problem in Georgia, but is possible depending on your specific home.
The more apparent and common issue is having a high humidity, which is any level over 60 percent. When there is a high content of water in the air, microorganisms like mold, mildew and dust mites are all able to proliferate. These microorganisms lower your indoor air quality and set you up for not only discomfort, but also severe respiratory ailments.
A secondary consequence of high humidity is that it can often cost you money. Air with high humidity feels extra warm, which may prompt you to run your air conditioner more often, which will raise your energy bills.
How to Handle the Humidity
If you happen to have an issue with low humidity in your home, you can install a whole-house humidifier or buy portable units. On the other hand, if you have the more common issue of high humidity, the only thing you will likely need to worry about is removing water from the air. A dehumidifier can be installed into your HVAC system as a whole-house solution, but there are also portable units available if you find that just certain parts of your home have issues.
