How Can Replacing HVAC Air Filters Impact Your System?

How Can Replacing HVAC Air Filters Impact Your System?

How Can Replacing HVAC Air Filters Impact Your System?HVAC air filters frequently fall victim to the “out of sight, out of mind” saying, sometimes going for months or even years without replacement. Changing your filter is one of the easiest HVAC maintenance tasks you can complete. It can also play a pivotal role in indoor air quality, HVAC efficiency and the overall lifespan of your HVAC unit.

What Do HVAC Air Filters Do?

The primary function of an HVAC air filter is to protect your system’s inner workings. A clean filter captures all the little particles that would otherwise pass through and foul up internal mechanisms, eventually leading to overheating, breakdowns, or ongoing diminished performance from gunk buildup. Additionally, air filters help remove dust, pollen and other common allergens from circulating inside your ductwork and household air.

Why Is Replacing HVAC Air Filters Critical?

Timely replacing HVAC air filters can significantly impact these primary areas:

  • Point temperature. When filters and ducts get clogged, less conditioned air can get to your living space, and it can take significantly longer for your rooms to come up to temperature.
  • Wear and tear on your system. A blower motor or A/C fan has to work harder if it’s drawing air through a dirty filter. If it gets really dirty, your filter may also release particles into the motor. Without these factors, your blower motor or fan will have a much higher overall life expectancy and much lower risk of costly repairs.
  • Your monthly energy bill. Your unit has to work harder and longer when the filter is dirty, so replacing or cleaning it regularly may instantly and significantly drop your energy bill.
  • Indoor air quality. Clean air filters can capture a significant percentage of airborne particles, so you’re not breathing them in anymore. This may help improve allergy symptoms and respiratory issues, such as asthma.
