Is Poor Indoor Air Quality a Result of Issues in Your Ductwork?

Is Poor Indoor Air Quality a Result of Issues in Your Ductwork?Like many other homeowners, you probably take the quality of the indoor air you breathe for granted. While your primary focus may be on energy savings and home comfort, you and your family could be suffering form poor indoor air quality as a result of leaky ductwork. But don’t just take our word for it. See for yourself how leaky ductwork could be negatively impacting the health of your household.

Common Problems With Leaky Ductwork

  •  Distribution of bad air: Leaks in ducts that runs through attics, crawl spaces and basements could be pulling in some nasty air and distributing it throughout your home. It’s not uncommon to find leaks located near mold growth, dirt and dust, and sometimes even dead rodents and other critters. That’s certainly not something you want to be breathing.
  • Infiltration: When air is returned to leaky ducts on the supply side of the HVAC system, it’s only natural that some air will be lost in the transfer. In order to account for this loss, air from cracks, gaps, attics, crawl spaces and other areas will replace it. This air is unfiltered and may not be healthy to breathe in.
  • Backdrafting: Ducts can increase the risk of poor indoor air quality by contributing to the backdrafting of combustion appliances. Ducts can create negative pressure on the return side of the combustion appliance zone. This prevents exhaust gases of combustion appliances from being able to go up the flue, leading to a backdraft and the increased likelihood of dangerous carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Humidity and mold: One major problem associated with leaky ductwork is a reduction of moisture control. All it takes is a little bit of excess moisture for mold to grow within your HVAC system. This can lead to serious illnesses and aggravate those in your home who suffer from allergies.
