This is How Your HVAC Components Work Together

This is How Your HVAC Components Work TogetherThe HVAC system components inside your home’s comfort system work together to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. HVAC systems in this region either combine a gas furnace with a central air conditioner, called a gas pack, or use heat pumps. The indoor air handler houses the furnace and an evaporator coil. The outdoor compressor contains many of the parts required for cooling, and in the case of a heat pump, for heat extraction to produce indoor heat.

Core Heating Components

A gas line delivers fuel inside the furnace’s burner, where it heats up an adjacent heat exchanger. The blower motor inside the air handler runs a fan that blows over the heat exchanger, which warms the air. It travels through the ductwork to warm your home.

A thermostat turns the system on and off and the fan pulls air through an air filter before it enters the air handler. The filter may seem inconsequential compared to other HVAC system components, but in reality, a clean filter is the one part that contributes to lower energy bills and better system durability.

Heat pumps generate heat differently. They use refrigerant to extract heat from the outdoor air and the compressor in the outdoor condenser to intensify it. The refrigerant flows through an evaporator coil inside the blower compartment, and the air blowing over it absorbs the heat.

Core Cooling Components

All central air conditioners and heat pumps use the indoor evaporator coil and the outdoor condenser coil to complete the cooling cycle. The compressor inside the condenser alters the pressure of the refrigerant. As the chilled refrigerant circulates through the evaporator coil, it picks up the heat from the air and disperses it outdoors. A heat pump reverses the refrigerant flow winter and summer.
