Tip to Prepare Your Home’s HVAC for Winter

Tip to Prepare Your Home’s HVAC for Winter

Tip to Prepare Your Home's HVAC for WinterCold weather may still be a few months away, but it’s not too early to start getting your heating system ready for the cooler season. Here are some tips you can use for effective HVAC winter prep:

Change the air filters

It’s always a good idea to start a new season with fresh, clean air filters in your HVAC system. Filters improve indoor air quality by trapping and holding particles of dust, pollen, fibers, and other material. If your air filters are dirty or clogged, they can’t do a good job of removing these particulates. A dirty filter can also reduce the airflow needed by the HVAC equipment, which can cause malfunctions or even damage.

Check and test thermostats

Thermostats, particularly programmable models, control when your heating system operates. Before the season starts, check the thermostats and make sure they have fresh batteries in them. Test thermostats to ensure they will start the heating system properly. Have any problems checked or, if needed, replace the thermostats completely.

Open and clean air vents

The air vents that allow warm air into your home may have been closed for the season. Open them up and clean the vents and the ductwork immediately around them. Over the spring, summer, and fall, material such as dust, dirt, fibers, hairs, and other material could have fallen into the vents. A good cleaning ensures you don’t get a blast of unpleasant particulates when the heating system is first turned on.

Check and test carbon monoxide detectors

The dangers of carbon monoxide can’t be overemphasized: in the right concentration, it can be deadly. If you use a fuel-burning heating system, check your carbon monoxide detectors before starting it. Put in fresh batteries, press the test button until the detector’s alarm sounds, and clean the detector to ensure nothing will interfere with its function.
