3 Tips For Improving Indoor Air Quality In Homes With Allergy Sufferers

If you suffer from allergies, you probably have to take care when you go outside to avoid an attack. Some people with severe symptoms even wear a mask when necessary. You might assume that when you are at home you are at much less risk of an allergy attack. However, if you have a poorly maintained HVAC system, you can often suffer just as badly in your own living room. Fortunately, there are three simple methods for improving indoor air quality which will allow you to reduce your chances of allergy problems at home.

Replacing Filters

One of the most effective things you can do to remove the allergy causing particles from the air you breathe is to make sure that you regularly change the filters in your heating and cooling system. Aside from the money you are wasting because of inefficient heating or cooling, badly clogged filters quickly lose the ability to properly filter particles out of the air. It is important to replace throwaway filters every month,  pleated filters at least once every three months and specialty filters usually once a year. Check with the filter manufacturer or call a HVAC specialist for help determining the type of filters you have in your home.

Sealing Ducts

Another area that might produce problems is your ducts. If they are leaky, you can be getting dust, mold, bits of fiberglass and even chemicals from outside floating around your home. This is why you should ensure that all of your ducts and and connecting duct work is completely sealed against leaks.

Regular Maintenance

Improving indoor air quality often requires the help of a professional. One of the best ways to make sure that both your filters and ducts are in good working order is to schedule regular check ups. In addition to handling these two issues, a professional can also check the overall efficiency of your HVAC system and look for other problems affecting air quality.

Allergy symptoms can be enough of a nuisance when you are walking around outside, so you should not have to endure allergy causing particles in your home.
