3 Steps To Improving Indoor Air Quality This Winter

3 Steps To Improving Indoor Air Quality This WinterAs winter rolls around, you’re likely thinking about the holidays, and trimming a tree and hanging your stockings with care. However, what you might not be thinking about is your home’s indoor air quality. Did you know that research shows that the air inside our homes and offices is often more polluted than the outside air? Poor indoor air quality increases the risk and symptoms of allergies, asthma, and other airborne-related illnesses for you and your loved ones.

However, you can take the following steps to help improve your indoor air quality, and cut down on ailments caused by dust mites, pollen, mold, and other allergens:

  • Use an air purifier or HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter in your home to remove microscopic pollutants in the air. Additionally, don’t smoke inside your home or allow others to do so, and change your air filters regularly so that your HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems works optimally and your indoor air quality remains high.
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum often to keep dust and dirt at a minimum within your home. Try to use non-chemical cleaning solutions inside.
  • Consider installing a whole-house humidifier, which can help keep you indoor air at a humidity level below 50 percent. Mold thrives in moist conditions, so keeping your humidity low prevents its’ proliferation and protects your home’s valuable contents, as well as the health of you and your loved ones. Also, allow as much sunlight into your rooms as possible. This can help inhibit the growth of mold and dust mites, and help get rid of the ones that may already be there.
