Don’t Let Spring Ruin Your Indoor Air Quality — 9 Tips

Don't Let Spring Ruin Your Indoor Air Quality -- 9 TipsSpring is a time when everyone throws the shutters open, raises the windows, and takes in a deep breath of fresh, clean air. But how clean is the air, really? Your home’s indoor air quality can be compromised by dirty air that’s been trapped inside all winter, as well as allergen-filled air that enters your home through windows and air leaks. Your indoor air is likely to contain allergens and other health-threatening particulates.

We spend most of our time indoors at home, school or work so the quality of the air we breathe inside, if anything, is more important than the air we breathe outside. Many health problems can be exacerbated or triggered from indoor air pollution – the list includes a variety of allergies, asthma and other respiratory problems. Here are nine tips for improving indoor air quality this spring:

  1. Spring clean your home to remove clutter. Keeping your home clutter free will reduce places where dust can settle.
  2. Consider adding an electronic air cleaner. They do a good job of removing even the smallest airborne particulates from your home.
  3. Allergy sufferers should keep windows closed at night and in the morning to keep pollen from blowing in.
  4. Use chemical-free cleaners in your home with microfiber dust cloths you can wash after using. Dust from high to low surfaces and vacuum last.
  5. Wash bedding in hot water at least once each week to get rid of dust mites and bacteria.
  6. Take your shoes off at the front door to prevent tracking in allergen-filled materials from outside.
  7. Consider adding germicidal ultraviolet lights to your HVAC system. UV lights work by eliminating mold growth, viruses and other airborne organisms before they’re distributed throughout your home.
  8. Change your HVAC filters frequently, as needed. Check monthly. Also, keeping registers clear of furniture and other obstructions will keep the air flowing smoothly.
  9. Replace or clean kitchen sponges each week. Mold and bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments.
