If you’re like most people, you come up with New Year’s resolutions every year. Some you stick with and some you don’t. But you’d likely follow through on a resolution if you knew it would result in significant savings. That’s exactly the case with HVAC resolutions.

Follow these recommendations and see meaningful reductions in your heating and cooling bills in 2018.

• Commit to checking your furnace (or A/C) filter at least once a month during high-uses seasons like winter and summer. Not replacing a dirty furnace filter will allow dust to coat sensitive parts; restrict essential airflow through your system; and may reduce indoor air quality. If air isn’t flowing smoothly, equipment can get stressed, energy wasted, and some rooms may not get properly heated or cooled.
• Sign up for a maintenance contract, which ensures your heating and cooling systems get annual (or more frequent) professional maintenance. Without a comprehensive tune-up every year, HVAC systems get dirty, miss lubrication, and fall out of adjustment. A professional technician can be counted on to spot small problems before they become big, expensive ones.
• Inspect your home to make sure heating vents and registers aren’t blocked by drapes, rugs, furniture, toys and other objects. Anything that impedes clear airflow through a central heating or A/C system is a problem.
• Look for holes and cracks in the exterior of your home that allow air to transfer between inside and outside. Air leaks force HVAC equipment to work harder and waste energy. Likely spots for leaks are windows and doors; places where utility wires, pipes or vents protrude through walls; and the sill plate (where foundation meets the walls). Use caulk, weatherstripping or spray foam to seal openings, depending on the type, size and location of the leak.
• Change the fan-blade rotation on your ceiling fans to counterclockwise in the summer and clockwise in the winter. Each setting in the correct season will reduce the workload on your HVAC system.
