Sealing Up Those Air Leaks In Your Home? Don’t Neglect The Attic Hatch

If your home has air leaks, sealing them will prevent unnecessarily high energy bills, increase the durability of your home and enhance indoor air quality. When doing so, don’t forget your attic hatch — a primary contributor to energy losses.

It’s important to seal air leaks because they force HVAC equipment to overcompensate, and utility bills to grow. In addition, pollutants in outdoor air can seep inside your home and compromise air quality. Also, when moisture gains access to your home, it can lead to rot and mold problems.

So while you’re sealing your home’s leaks in the basement, crawl space and around window frames and doors, be sure to make your attic hatch a priority. This is one of the most common places that air leaks occur. Keeping the attic hatch well sealed prevents hot attic air from seeping into the home, which can force your HVAC system to work harder and longer. Most hatch doors are just a thin piece of wood, so it’s necessary to apply insulation to its surface. You should also use caulk to seal leaks around the attic hatch frame, from both the home side and the attic side.

Sealing air leaks around your attic hatch can improve energy efficiency by up to 30 percent.
